TL;DR: We have a Snow Groomer for every machine
The table above is a good reference for what groomer to get based on what machine you have, but we will add more details below.
15” Snowmobile
Most snowmobiles have either a 15” or 16” wide track including trails sleds and mountain sleds. These do not have clutching for towing. They have plenty of power but are not made to tow. We do not recommend that you tow with a mountain or deep powder snowmobile. However we do have customers that do tow our groomers with these snowmobiles so it can be done.
These smaller tracked snow machines don’t need a massive groomer to cover their own tracks. That being said, our Sno-Master 72 is still light enough for a 15” snowmobile to groom an open field or parking lot, possibly even an air strip. Remember, the ideal grooming speed is between 7-12 MPH (12-20 KPH).
20” Snowmobile
With a larger track width, these snowmobiles are usually more of a work or utility snow machine and can pull our groomers at low speed with ease. They come in high and low range. We still recommend exercising caution when a sno razor is engaged to avoid over aggressive cutting. Even more so when grooming up a hill.
Tracked ATV
A little bit of everything; traction, gearing, weight. Tracked ATVs have no issue pulling all our groomers, but with their larger size leaves a larger trail. Our smaller groomers are only able to cover 44” at the max. That’s why, even though a Tracked ATV can pull a Path-Master or Trakor with ease, we don’t recommend it without a Sno-Master. The Sno-Master 48 is a great size for covering ATV Tracks especially if you have a narrow trail that can’t fit a Sno-Master 72. Additionally, the Sno-Master platforms allows you to add a towbar for pulling a Trakor. Allowing you to set classic tracks for nordic or crosscountry.
Tracked UTV
The tank of the trail. Much like tracked ATVs, tracked UTVs can pull all our snow groomers. These usually have a larger wheel(track) base, but a 72 Sno-Master (with 96” of grooming capacity with the wings) does a great job of completely covering the tracks even when turning.
Wings or No Wings?
Our 12” wings really only add another 5in (13cm) of stiff clearance, the rest of the wing (7in/18cm) is a flexible polyurethane. The wings serve a dual purpose of giving your trail an extra 24in (12”/side)(60cm) groomed corduroy and a cleaner edge that helps prevent snow from building a wall on the edges and falling back into the trail.
Weight. Are Snow Groomers really that light?
Yes, our groomers are designed to float on top of snow making it possible for smaller machines to pull. With our customer built chassis/compaction pan, it makes our groomers even more versatile as it allows you to add blocks/pavers to increase the weight and compacting ability. So our groomers are actually not that big and not that heavy (relatively “not that heavy”, but 100lbs is still 45kg).
Razor or No Razor?
The purpose of the Razor is to cut and warm the top layer of snow so it can be packed and set as corduroy. The Razor should only cut a small piece of the snow at a time, 1 inch or less. The key to good trails when grooming is consistency, however if you need to clean up an unmaintained trail you can make multiple passes slowly working out the whoops or drifts in the trail. Cutting more than 1 inch at a time with the razor can overwork the pulling machine or cause the groomer to dig or dive deeper into the snow and cause chunking. When the snow chunks, the compaction pan is not able to smooth the snow and leave good corduroy.
Sno-Blaster/V-Plow
Our Sno-Blaster or V-Plow is exactly as advertised. A tow-behind plow that blasts snow up and off of the trail. Our customers who love this product used it before a racing event to remove fresh snow that has covered the trail and made it too soft for bikes and runners. Races that would have otherwise been canceled because of “too much fresh snow”, are now saved because of our Sno-Blaster.
Trakor / Nordic
The Trakor makes great Classic Cross Country Ski tracks. It is built off the Pathmaster chassis and exchanges corduroy for XC Ski tracks. Because of this, we also designed the DeTrakor add-on. The DeTrakor allows you to interchangeably groom XC Tracks on flat ground, and slopestyle full corduroy for going down a hill, and then switch back again for XC.
Our Nordic package Sno-Masters include an additional tow bar for the Sno-Master that allows the Trakor to quickly attach behind. This allows you to get a bigger trail than with the Trakor alone, while still having a designated lane for XC Tracks (or not, if the DeTrakor is engaged.)
What about the wheel kit?
All of the above measurements (weight and width) are including the wheel kit. So without one, the groomer will be about 28 lbs (13 kg) lighter. Unfortunately the wheel kit is only available on our Sno-Master line, but we are researching the possibility of adding wheels to the Path-Master/Trakor line as well. The wheel kit allows you to drop down airless tires that lift the groomer off the ground and allow you to pull the groomer over asphalt and gravel. It also makes moving/storing the groomer in the off season a lot easier as one person can usually move the groomer around much like you would a small single axle trailer.
